What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is an ancient healing art, with a documented history of over 2000 years. It is based on concepts that describe illness as disharmony in the interconnected web of the body. It applies concepts such as Qi, yin/yang, meridians, and excess/deficiency to arrive at a diagnosis, whereby placement of needles in strategic areas is used to alleviate and correct any imbalances. While the theory of acupuncture is embodied by historical claims, it is still used today as a safe and effective treatment. Despite the fact that precisely ‘how it works’ remains largely a topic of debate, it has been studied in numerous clinical trials, and has been shown an effective treatment for many conditions, beyond placebo. No matter how it works, there is no denying the physiologic changes that occur in the body with acupuncture: increased local blood flow, activation of various nerves and brain areas, increased sensations, endorphin release, and contraction of muscles.
