A Swedish study published in the Acupuncture in Medicine Journal shows that acupuncture for babies can greatly reduce the amount of crying time in infants with colic.  This is welcome information for parents and doctors alike who have great difficulty in coping with, diagnosing and treating infant colic.  The study showed that 6 very brief treatments of acupuncture administered over 3 weeks reduced infant crying by up to 30 minutes.

Up to 10% of infants are considered colicky.  The very nature of colic makes it very difficult to diagnose and treat, as  up to 90% of colicky babies have no abnormal medical findings.  Colic not only causes pain and distress in infants, it puts colicky babies at a higher risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, Shaken Baby Syndrome and can also cause marital discord, extreme fatigue, lower parental self-esteem and can put new parents at greater risk for developing postpartum depression.

While the study has a few limitations, any positive insight into possible treatments for colic is good news for both practitioners and parents.  Acupuncture is a great addition to the small number of non-pharmaceutical treatments available to practitioners.  Infant colic is a difficult and frustrating situation to deal with and no parent should suffer alone.  If you or someone you know has a baby with colic, seeking support from a qualified practitioner will ease the suffering of both parent and child.  Call today to book an appointment with one of our qualified naturopathic doctors.
