Naturopathic Medicine Fergus – Treating the Whole Person

Naturopathic medicine is system of primary healthcare that focuses on prevention of disease.  Naturopathic doctors use a combination of physical and lab evaluation and evidence based natural therapies to diagnose and treat many aspects of family health, in all patients from children to the elderly.  With a focus on the whole person, and totality of symptoms, Naturopathic Medicine aims to find and treat the cause of disease and optimize health instead of focusing on individual symptoms.  Naturopathic Doctors are Primary Care Providers in Ontario, and are capable of monitoring the health of patients, until such a time that referral becomes necessary.

A presumption exists where Naturopathic Doctors are opposed to medications and treatments provided by Medical Doctors.  This is not the case for us. We will work with, not against your current health care team.  We work diligently to help change the health parameters of our patients, but make it clear that only your prescribing physician can determine when a current medication or treatment is no longer warranted.

The Principles of Naturopathic Medicine are the foundation for naturopathic practice.  Further, naturopathic doctors are compelled to act morally, ethically, and professionally in accordance with the Naturopathic Doctor Oath:

Primum No Nocere – First do no harm
Vis Mediatrix Naturae – The healing power of nature
Tolle Causam – Identify and treat the cause of disease
Tolle Totum – Treat the whole person
Docere – The physician as teacher
Prohibitio – Prevention is the best cure

I dedicate myself to the service of humanity as a practitioner of the art and science of Naturopathic Medicine.

By precept, education and example, I will assist and encourage others to strengthen their health, reduce risks for disease, and preserve the health of our planet for ourselves and future generations.

I will continually endeavor to improve my abilities. I will conduct my life and practice of Naturopathic Medicine with integrity and freedom from prejudice. I will keep confident what should not be divulged.

I will honor the principles of Naturopathic Medicine:

First, to do no harm
To cooperate with the healing powers of nature
To address the fundamental causes of disease
To heal the whole person through individualized treatment
To teach the principles of healthy living and preventive medicine

With my whole heart, before these witnesses, as a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine, I pledge to remain true to this oath.

Some of the Therapeutics Used by Naturopathic Doctors:

Botanical Medicine

The use of botanical medicine is the most ancient form of medical treatment as well as a widely studied branch in clinical research. Botanical treatments are the basis for the majority of modern pharmaceutical agents, and have a similar action in the body often with fewer and less severe side effects.  Upwards of 80% of all pharmaceutical drugs are synthetic derivatives of plants, with as much as 25% of current medications being derived directly from plants.

Injection Therapy

Low energy, decreased immunity and pain can all be the result of long-term nutrient deficiencies.  In order to absorb vitamins and minerals, the body requires certain molecules and processes to be available in the digestive tract.  Various factors can decrease the availability of these molecules and processes such as age, medications, disease or poor digestive health.  Using a needle and syringe, injection therapies deliver a variety of therapeutic agents directly into the body, bypassing the slow and often inefficient digestive tract and allowing 100% absorption.

Lifestyle and Prevention

Healthy lifestyle and prevention are keys to life-long wellness.  In a society where poor diet and unhealthy lifestyles are becoming the norm, chronic disease is quickly becoming a huge problem.  For the first time in two centuries, today’s children are expected to have a shorter lifespan than their parents.  This is a direct result of over-nutrition and under-activity, which increase the risk of developing Type II diabetes, heart disease, stroke and other chronic diseases.

Clinical Nutrition

As the foundation of naturopathic medicine, clinical nutrition is an integral part of both the treatment of chronic disease and the management of overall health and wellness.  Clinical nutrition is the use of diet and supplements to improve health and treat illness.  Minor dietary changes can drastically reduce or even resolve a wide range of symptoms.  A nutrient dense intake is very important in modulating normal bodily function such as energy and sleep, and can drastically improve risk factors for many disease processes.

Physical Medicine

Up to 25% of Canadians report having sufficient pain to interfere with normal activities.  This pain and reduced mobility can be caused from a variety of factors ranging from chronic disease to sedentary lifestyle to recent trauma.  As the number one complaint of most adults over the age of 25, pain is a significant limiting factor to health and happiness.
